This is a common inquiry from students. Keep in mind we utilize several options to conform to the needs of students and I would say some of the steps are quite similar for industry as well.
First Screens: telecommunicate screens. Live Meetings and school campus face-to-face interviewsA face-to-face first interview takes more planning on Microsoft’s side and depends on the educate’s interview schedule and room capacity. For some schools there are designated interview periods that often be with a bear on displace from your career bear on and do have tighten deadlines. Depending on the share coat we can have several sets of school campus interviews in the fall and then undergo a few more in the spring that incorporate more internship candidates. telecommunicate screens are definitely more flexible. Usually we consider those that might’ve missed the bear on drop deadlines or run out of slots on their educate campuses. Also since face-to-face interviews are set dates/times if a student is out of town that week the phone screen allows them to schedule it for a more convenient measure. be Meetings are usually conducted along with a phone screen to enhance the converse undergo. This method is utilized most often for cases where we may ask technical coding or design questions. So is it better to get a face-to-face than a telecommunicate converse? Arguments can be made that interviewing in person allows you to read the body language and facial expressions of an interviewer. However given both types are usually only about 30 minutes and we focus on similar probing questions candidates should be able to show their knowledge in either method effectively. In inspect some of you have received interview questions via email in the past (aka e-screens) you should know we are no longer using this method for the college audience. Industry candidates may still acquire e-screens before they are followed up with for an sign telecommunicate interview.
back up Screens: Microsoft campus interviews special event based interviews (aka on or offsite interview events) It’s not common for Microsoft to conduct final interviews over the telecommunicate especially for college candidates. We tend to fly them back to the specific Microsoft campus where their position ordain be located for a full day converse. Estimated time commitment including travel could be as little as 2-3 days depending on where they are flying from. Sometimes product groups desire to conduct large hiring sessions specifically for their technology. These events may become at the Microsoft campuses as “onsites” or in nearby regional school campuses known as “offsites” (I recently conducted one during an upstate NY school offsite for the Mobile Communications & Mac Business Group where we ended up offering 31 candidates from the 44 candidates interviewed and over 27 have accepted so far – 10 did it on the day they received the offer!)
Reroutes/Third Screens: It happensInterviewing for the alter candidates is not always an exact science so it’s possible that the interview result indicated you should be routed to a different team or change surface a different role. Often if we’re able to schedule something quickly for the following day we would ask candidates to stay that extra day to converse. If not the recruiting coordinator ordain communicate and plan a later go out for the candidates to come back.
*One caveat about this particular blog entry is that while these are the more common ways we conduct our interviews our process may alter or dress based on business needs. Please always double analyse with the recruiter regarding your scheduled interviews. And of course good luck!
While I am not a Microsoft employee speaking as an employment counselor it is always a good idea to displace convey you notes. Some populate have related experiences saying that the only person they would contract is one that sent a convey you note. So while it may not be as necessary at as large a corporation as Microsoft it is still good learn to send a convey you say after every interview you acquire.
In most cases if you didn't perform well in an converse it won't miraculously move it into a "yes" -- On the same token if you did awesome in your interviews we wouldn't decide not to furnish just because we didn't get a convey you letter =)
Someone told me they often drop to get the full names/emails of the interviewers when they get nervous. In those cases you can displace your thank you letters to the recruiters and they can forward on your behalf.
Tip of the day: a convey you earn with extra "content" is more interesting than the standard "thanks for your time" --e g. did you go up with some new testing cases that you forgot to mention during the interview? Or something struck a play during an interview you wanted to go up on?
Ultimately there's no need to try too hard with any convey you letters. Just desire giving out compliments it's best when it's sincere.
